Do I Need Planning Permission to Change My Windows?

Confused about whether you need Permission to Change your Windows?

You’re not alone. The rules can be tricky and they depend on your property type, location, and exactly what changes you’re planning to make.
This page will help you understand the basics. And if you’re still unsure, we’ll check it for you for free. Just upload your address and a few photos, and we’ll give you friendly, expert advice with no obligation.

When you usually don’t need permission:

If your property is not listed and not in a conservation area, and you’re replacing your windows like-for-like (same style, material, and appearance), then you probably don’t need planning permission.
This is known as permitted development.
But you still need to be careful if you are doing any of the following, please get in touch and we can let you know if permission is needed or not:

  • Changing timber to uPVC
  • Altering the design (e.g. adding glazing bars, changing opening style)
  • Widening or repositioning window openings you may need approval even outside of protected areas.

When You Usually Need Permission

Listed Buildings

If your home is Grade I, II or II* listed, you must apply for Listed Building Consent before altering any windows, even if you're keeping the same style or using traditional materials.
This includes:

  • Changing or restoring sash windows
  • Upgrading to slimline double glazing
  • Painting or changing window colour
  • Conducting repairs to damaged frames

You can’t rely on a window company to tell you this—it’s your legal responsibility as the homeowner.

Conservation Areas

Conservation areas are a little more tricky as all come with different levels of strictness. If your home is in a Conservation Area, you may need to apply for planning permission to:

  • Change the material (e.g. timber to uPVC or aluminium)
  • Change windows from single to double glazing
  • Changing the style of window
  • Install double glazing that looks noticeably different

Local councils vary in how strict they are. That’s why it helps to have someone with experience review your proposal before you commit.

Whath happens if you don’t get Permission?

Changing windows without the correct consent, especially in listed buildings, can lead to enforcement notices from your local authority, costly fines, or even being forced to replace the windows again. It can also cause serious issues when selling your property later. It’s simply notworth the risk. With our help, you can get it right the first time.
